"Tarpayati iti tarpanam" - to nourish or irrigate
The Netra kriyakrama in which
sneha is kept in the eye is called akshi tarpanam. It is the process of giving
nutrition to the eye by making the medicated ghrta to stayover the external eye, for
a specific period of time. It has both curative and preventive effects.
Absorption is very high as drugs are lipid and water
soluble with good corneal penetration.
Drug is in the form of vesicles composed of lipid
membrane enclosing an aquesous volume of drug.
Tissue contact time and bioavailability is
highest.

Lekhana is a type of ashta vidha sastra karma indicated in certain vartma rogas especially diseases of palpabral conjuctiva. It removes affected tissue and helps in rejuvenation.
Pothaki, vartmasarkara, bahala vartma, slishta vartma, kardama vartma, syavavartma,pillam, pittolklishta, kapholklishta, ulkishta vartma, sikata vartma, kukunakam etc.
It is highly modified procedure for ophthalmic medication in which putapaka rasa is kept in the eyes as tarpana kriya. It should be done after tarpana kriya.
